Acrophobia has arrived here at the Awesome Theory. What is it? Glad you asked. Acrophobia is a game where the site will generate random sets of letters (between 3 and 7) and it will be up to you to come up with the most awesome thing that the acronym could stand for.

To get started, go to the Acrophobia Lobby which will be linked from the Game Menu page. Why does the link have the Death Star on it? Because the Death Star is awesome, of course!Once there, you will see some queues like below.

game queues

Joining a queue is free (for now at least). You can be in all three queues at the same time if you wish. Games will start every day or two depending on how many people join the queues. The maximum number of participants per game is 10, so if there is more than 10 people in a queue, the people after the 10th person will get in the second game that starts.

Once the game starts, it will appear in a list below the queues. You can click on the game number to go to the page for the game. Once you are in the game, you will see the acronym for round 1 and a box for your entry. For the first round you are not required to do anything first, you can simply enter your acronym.

Acronym

Here are the rules for acronyms:

No profanity, and that includes curse words masked with special characters

No single letter words, like I or a. The parser will reject these

Do not use the real names of users on the site. Usernames are acceptable, however.

Please stay away from crude, sexually explicit, and or offensive submissions.

Made up words are highly discouraged.

If an entry breaks any of the above rules, please do not vote for it. If you notice a particular user constantly abusing these rules, please let an admin know.

Once you submit your acro, there is nothing more to do until everyone else has submitted theirs. Once everyone submits an acro, the game advances to the next round. If a game has gone 36 hours without a submission, it will go to the next round and those who have not submitted an acronym will be out of luck.

In the next round (and ever subsequent round after the first) you will have to vote on the last round's acros before you can submit one for that round. You will notice yours is greyed out - you cannot vote for your own as that would be stupid - everyone would just vote for their own. One you vote, you can submit your acro for the next round.

Once you hit the third round, in addition to voting on the previous round, you can see the results from the first round. The entry in red signifies that it was submitted first.

Voting

Scoring works as follows:

The entry with the most votes gets 10 points

The entry with the second most votes gets 7 points

The entry with the third most votes gets 4 points

The entry with the fourth most votes get 1 point

The first entry gets a bonus point

Whomever votes for the winning entry gets 2 bonus points

The tiebreaker for entries with the same number of votes is submission time. Points from each round are added to a composite score for each user. Once the last round is complete, 24 hours is alloted for voting on the final round. After that time is up, results will be tallied, winners and losers will be determined, and rewards will be divvied out. The rewards are as follows:

The amount of mullets you get is determined by the following formula: (60 / Place finished) * Total Players * (Rounds / 3)

The amount of awesome points you get is simply the amount of points you got times 10.

One caveat to call of this is that you have to finish in the top 5 to receive anything at all.

The only thing I can think of to tell you all is that you do not have to be in a game to vote. If you have a hard come coming up with good entries but want to participate anyway, you can check out the currently running games and vote on your favorite entries. I will be building a way for you to easily run through games you have not voted on soon. You get a small reward or mullets and awesome points for voting on a game you are not in. A note on alts here: Do not be in the same queue with your alt and your main at the same time. Also, do not vote your main's entries with your alt or vice versa. Expect statistics and leaderboards and such whenever I can get around to them as well.

Other functionality I expect to add to Acrophobia in the future is a championship queue, where game winners are automatically entered and the prizes are even greater. Also, I would like to make a speed queue, where rounds last around 5 minutes or less so you can get through a game in 15-30 minutes. Finally, I want to make the ability to create customized games so you can jump into a game with your guildmates or friends.

That is everything, I think. Go play and have fun!

It might be better if the Vote radio buttons were on the left of the acronym. Sometimes it is hard to tell which radio button is for which acronym. Otherwise, very fun!
