For the first time, but not the last, we have added a move to the duels: Overpower. What it does is pretty simple. It deals double damage to a target that is defending and half damage to a target that is not. It crits like any other attack (you still have the chance to crit equal to your crit + 5 - target's resistance over 100). If the target is defending, it will also never miss; however, if the target is not defending, it will hit or miss like normal.
Obviously, this makes defending a worse option than it used to be. In order to help balance this out, counterattacks have been increased in power, from 115% of a normal attack to 150%. Also, damage reduction from regular attacks to defenders has been increased from 25% to 50%.
A statistical analysis of the benefits of each action in a duel is as follows.
|% of base damage dealt when attacking|
|% of base damage recevied when targeted|
Statiscially, the best action will be the one that gives you the highest ratio of damage dealt to damage received. The results of that calculation, from best to worst, is as follows:
1. Wild - 1.11 (131 / 119)
2 (T). Attack - 1.08 (87.5 / 81)
2 (T). Overpower - 1.08 (87.5 / 81)
4. Defend - .6 (37.5 / 62.5)
Obviously, from this data, defending is almost always the worst thing to do. That fact is only partially mitigated by wild being the best thing to do statistically. This makes me believe that I should probably make it even better, like making it counter at 200% instead of 150%. That would bring the ratio up to .8, which is still bad, but an improvement.
Other notes on changes to the duels - I believe crits were too good, so I weakened them a little bit. Instead of doing a flat 200% damage, they now do randomly between 150% and 200%. So, on average, crits got about 12.5% worse. Also, due to a typo, monster special attacks were not doing as much damage as they should have been. Now they work as they should, which means many monsters will be harder than they used to be, depending on how often they use their special ability.
That is all for this duel update, but expect more in the near future making duels even better and more varied.
